CDM improves to 5-0 with 12-2 win at Los Al
Junior co-captains Hoyt and Hugh Crance lead a defense that has allowed just 3.2 goals/game.
On a cold and windy evening at Los Alamitos, the Sea Kings (5-0) held the Griffins (2-5) to just two goals on their way to a convincing 12-2 win.
Junior attackman Noah Howe led all scorers with four goals, but the defense was once again the story behind the CDM win.
"We expect quite a bit from this defensive group," commented CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "Most of them have been playing together for more than two years now. They take a great deal of pride in their work and it shows."
Junior co-captains Hoyt Crance (Jr. Goalie) and Hugh Crance (Jr./Defense) anchor a defense that has allowed an average of just 3.2 goals in each of the Sea Kings first five games. Brian Leguay (Jr./Defense) and Daniel McCabe (Sr./Defense) join Hugh Crance in the three close defense positions. The defensive midfield unit is led by long-stick midfielder Brett Greenlee (Jr./Defense), Chad Redfearn (Jr./Midfield), and Ryan Brown (Jr./Midfield).
"Our defense has spent a lot of time competing together. Not just in lacrosse, but in football as well. They know each other very well and have very high expectations within the group."
Four of them (Crance, Crance, Greenlee and Redfearn) anchor the defense on CDM's 3-time CIF championship football team.
The defense's ability to dramatically reduce the offensive production of its opponents so far this season is impressive. St. John's (Houston, TX) came in to the game averaging more than 7 goals per game. The Kings held them to less than half that total, or just 3 goals (42%), prior to removing the starting defensive group. In the next game against Ft. Collins Unified (CO), CDM's defense reduced their production from 10.5 goals to just 3 (31.5%). Last Friday, San Clemente came into the game averaging 13.4 goals per game and were limited to just 3 (22.3%). In last night's game, the Griffins saw their 7.6 goals per game average reduced to just 2 (26%). In summary, the Kings have held four teams, averaging 9.6 goals per game, to just 33% of their usual production.
"A big part of our ability to play such solid defense throughout the game is the relief we get from Jason Simaan's dominance at the face-off x," Mix added. "He enables us to get some rest between turns at the defensive end."
Simaan (So./Midfield) won 14 of 16 draws (87.5%).
The offense took full advantage of the possessions they gained from solid play at the defensive end and Simaan's face-off prowess, scoring 12 goals against the Griffins. In addition to Howe's four goals, five other Sea Kings recorded tallies. Ben Palitz (Jr./Attack/Midfield) had a pair of goals and two assists, Nino Chavez (Jr./Attack) and Sherwin Gersten (Jr./Midfield) each had wo goals, while Cole Campbell (Jr./Midfield) and Jay Damon (Sr./Midfield) each had a goal. Jack Denning (So./Midfield), Stephen Von Der Ahe (So./Midfield), and Nick Yi (So./Attack) all had assists.
Up next for CDM is a match-up with Newport Harbor (2-5) at Corona del Mar HS on Friday afternoon at 3:15 PM.
