Kings Reign Over Monte Vista 10-9

Michael Ortlieb makes another big play outside the crease in 10-9 win over Monte Vista
Playing in just their third home game of the season, the Sea Kings treated the overflowing crowd to an upset win over visiting Monte Vista (Danville, CA). The Mustangs, ranked No. 10 in the state by laxpower.com, had defeated Los Alamitos 11-2 and fallen to Foothill 12-9 in its previous two spring break games in Orange County. With their eighth consecutive win, the Kings improve their overall record to 8-1 (5-0 PCL).

"The key to today's victory was our response to the level of competition," said head coach G.W. Mix. "We beat a very good lacrosse team from Northern California because every one of our kids rose to the challenge and competed at a very high level."

Michael Ortlieb (Jr./Goalie) recorded 15 saves, some of the spectacular variety, and made countless plays outside of the crease enabling the Sea Kings to ride and clear effectively. "The play we got today from Michael was outstanding," said Mix. "He was a difference maker. He enabled our defense to play aggressively and our team to ride tenaciously, making key saves and big plays."

The Sea Kings seemed to win the possession battle at the face off X, with Taylor Epp (Jr./Midfield) and Dave Detrick (Sr./Midfield) controlling the majority of the draws. Donald Dalton (Sr./Defense) continued to be a dominant force for CDM all over the field, combining great wing play on the face-offs with tenacious defense and a big goal in transition.

The offense got on track early and was able to control the ball and the pace of the game for most of the time. Michael Keasey (Jr./Midfield) recently named OCVarsity Player of the Week led all scorers with 5 goals. Casey Mix (So./Attack) scored one goal and had four assists. Jack Ortlieb (So./Attack) netted the game winner with 24 seconds remaining (his second goal of the game) and the Kings held on to secure the crucial non-conference win.
