Sea Kings upset #4 St. Margaret's 7-4
CDM celebrates a third quarter goal to take a 5-3 lead over the Tartans in CIF Quarterfinal action
"What a great night for CDM Lacrosse," commented Sea King head coach G.W. Mix. "This atmosphere tonight was really special. It was a big time game in a big time environment between two really good teams and I thought our kids responded to the challenge extremely well. We were so disciplined on defense, relentless on ground balls, and patient and poised on the offensive end. It's as sound an effort as we have had.
Junior's Logan Ip (Midfield/Notre Dame) and Ty Caffarelli (Attack/Monmouth) each tallied two goals and an assist, while fellow classmate Lucas Newton (Midfield/Villanova) added a pair of goals. Sophomore midfielder Oliver Ayala scored his only goal to open the fourth quarter at the 11:04 mark to give the Sea Kings their largest lead of the night - a 3-goal margin - at 6-3.
The real story of the night was CDM's defense, which was stellar all evening, shutting the Tartans out in the third quarter and allowing just one second half goal. Sophomore goalie Grant Giuliano recorded 7 saves (.636 Save Pct.). After scoring to get within two goals at 6-4, St. Margaret's earned a two-minute extra-man opportunity after a slash and unnecessary roughness penalty on the Sea Kings. CDM's face-off team and defense nullified the advantage and put the game away with Luke Newton's unassisted goal at the 5:53 mark (7-4) and some patient offensive possessions down the stretch.
"Tim (Cassi) does such a remarkable job with our defense and goalies, said Mix. "They are always well-prepared and fundamentally sound. They just completely shut down a very talented team that was averaging 13.4 goals per game. Grant made some huge saves at the right time. It was fun to watch."

Sophomore midfielder Oliver Ayala dodges and scores CDM's sixth goal of the night.
Up next for CDM is the CIF Southern Section Semi-Final against top-seeded Loyola (Los Angeles) at Loyola High School at 3:15 PM on Friday, June 4.
