CDM's Dalton to play for Dragons
Donald Dalton will play Division I lacrosse at Drexel University in Philadelphia
Donald Dalton, a standout defenseman for the Sea Kings, has recently announced he has signed a letter of intent to play collegiate lacrosse at Drexel University. Dalton becomes the third member of the CDM lacrosse program in the past three years to earn an opportunity to play Division I lacrosse. In 2009, midfielder Noah Molnar chose to play for the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh University. Ryan Mix, a 2010 graduate of CDM, is a member of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish lacrosse team currently ranked number one in the nation.
"Donald is a special athlete and has the ability to take over a game," said CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "He will be challenged a great deal more at Drexel and at the Division I level, but he has the talent and the competitive spirit to respond well. His head coach in college is a defensive-minded guy which should help him adjust and develop quickly."
Last summer in Baltimore, Dalton had a very impressive showing at Champ Camp, the nation's oldest and most prestigious recruiting camp. Playing for Lax West (a team comprised of the top players from CDM, Newport Harbor, Torrey Pines, Cathedral Catholic, and a few other schools), he grabbed the attention of several of the top coaches and soon had opportunities with programs such as Air Force, Drexel, Hofstra and Penn State.
"Coach Mix is pretty good friends with Coach Voelker (Drexel head coach) and I really liked it when I visited," said Dalton. "It's a good academic school with good lacrosse. I like the location, and it seemed like a good fit for me."
Dalton added having former teammates like Molnar and Mix helped prepare him for what it takes to compete at the college game's highest level.
"I have played with kids who have gone on to play at the Division I level," Dalton added. " I am confident I can handle it. It's exciting."
Before he gets the chance to don a Dragon uniform, Dalton and his teammates have plenty of unfinished business left at CDM. He is a captain of this year's team, currently 11-2 and ranked in the top 5 in Orange County. Critical upcoming regular season games for the Sea Kings include St. Margaret's (4/19 at 7:00 PM at Davidson Field) and Rancho Bernardo (4/22 at 7:45 PM at Rancho Bernardo HS). The Tartans of St. Margaret's are currently ranked #2 in Orange County, while the Broncos of Rancho Bernardo are ranked #2 in San Diego County. The Orange County playoffs begin Tuesday, May 3.
"He has really developed into a true leader this spring," Mix added. "I am proud of how hard he has worked over the past year to become a good player and great teammate. It is an honor to have him wear Sea King blue and become the third player in three years to go on to represent our program at the highest level of college lacrosse."
Drexel University is located in Philadelphia, PA. The Dragons compete in the Colonial Athletic Conference, along with traditional lacrosse powers Delaware, Hofstra, UMass, Penn State and Towson. Click here to follow Drexel Lacrosse.
