Pacific Coast Forecast: Sea Kings Reign

Junior Connor Canale and the Sea Kings clinched their fourth consecutive PCL crown with a 19-5 win
Connor Canale (Jr./Attack) scored four goals and added three assists, all in the first half, leading CDM to an impressive 19-5 victory over the University Trojans. The Kings jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter and increased the margin to 13-0 before Uni scored its first goal of the day at the 6:47 mark of the second quarter. The Trojans had trouble gaining possessions all afternoon as Taylor Epp (Jr./Midfield) and Dave Detrick (Sr./Midfield) once again dominated the face-offs, winning 21 of 28 draws (.750%).

"Connor played well this afternoon," said CDM head Coach G.W. Mix. "We called on him late last week to step in at attack to fill Casey's spot and he is doing a solid job. He performed well again today, but the real test comes on Wednesday night." Canale has moved from midfield to attack to replace Casey Mix (So./Attack) who is out with an unspecified injury.

Prior to today's game, CDM was 8-0 in Pacific Coast League play, with Beckman in second place at 6-2. Although the Patriots play CDM on Thursday, they will be unable to dethrone the Kings. With the win, the Sea Kings have claimed their fourth consecutive Pacific Coast League crown and improved their overall record to 12-3 (9-0 in the PCL).

Eleven different players scored for the Sea Kings, including multiple goal performances by Canale, Hunter Molnar (Jr./Attack), Jack Ortlieb (So./Attack), Michael Keasey (Jr./Midfield) and Aaron Khosh (Jr./Midfield). The win at University this afternoon brings CDM's record in the Pacific Coast League to an impressive 37-0 over the past four seasons. The final PCL game of the 2011 season against Beckman will take place on Thursday at 5:30 PM at Corona del Mar.

Most of CDM's starting players left the game late in the first or early in the second quarter, giving the balance of the team some crucial playing time and game experience as the Kings head toward the 2011 Orange County playoffs. One of the more impressive showings came when Andreé Busto (Sr./Goalie) replaced Michael Ortlieb (Jr./Goalie) in the first quarter and held the Trojans to just five goals for the rest of the afternoon.

"We have had a pretty good run in the league over the past four seasons," said Mix. "Some outsiders are quick to comment about how lop-sided the PCL is right now and how easy these games are for us. Frankly, we take offense to statements like that. These wins have not necessarily come easy. Most of our kids dedicated themselves years ago to being good lacrosse players, competing in youth programs and on summer teams. They have spent countless hours working on their stick skills and learning the game. At CDM, we take the position that our success in the Pacific Coast League is the result of what our players have done to create the disparity between our program and the rest and not a result of the disparity itself."

Up next, the Sea Kings travel south to San Juan Capistrano on Wednesday evening to take on the Tartans of St. Margaret's (7:00 PM @ St. Margaret's) in a game with significant playoff implications. The winner will likely secure a top four seed in the upcoming Orange County playoffs, earning them a first round bye on Tuesday, May 3.
