It's Bye-Bye To The Bye

Sea King goalie Michael Ortlieb and defenseman Cameron Moattari saw plenty of action vs. the Tartans
It was a big game for both teams. Two of the top five teams in Orange County, battling for one of four first-round byes in the Orange County Championship Tournament, which begins next Tuesday, May 3. The winner secures a top four seed, the loser not likely to do so.

From the first face-off through the last whistle, the Tartans played with a purpose, dominating the Sea Kings 13-3 in a game that seemed lop-sided at best. Eight different players scored for St. Margaret's, who led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter and took an 8-2 lead into halftime.

"When you play good teams with good players, sometimes you just get beat," said CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "We got beat in every aspect of the game tonight. We were out-coached, out-manned, out-run and out-hustled." Nothing appeared to go right for CDM and every ball seemed to bounce in the Tartan's favor. Mix was asked if there was a positive the Kings could take away from the game. "We can fix some of it and have enough time to make the repairs," he said.

The game, originally scheduled for Tuesday evening, April 19th at Davidson Field, was postponed due to a safety issue with the lighting system at Newport Harbor High School. Because of the terrible inconvenience St. Margaret's experienced traveling to Newport Beach only to have the game postponed upon their arrival, CDM offered to play the make-up game in San Juan Capistrano.

"Regardless of the circumstances, some have questioned why we would give up home field advantage for such a critical game," Mix commented. "It was an easy decision. We talk to our kids all of the time about 'doing what's right, not what's easy' and playing this game on the road, while not easy, was clearly the right thing to do."

With the loss, CDM falls to 12-4 on the season, having dropped three of its last four games by a combined score of 36-17. "There is never a good time to get your butt kicked," Mix said when asked if he was concerned about the timing of the loss. "We have played three of the top teams in Southern California in the past two weeks and we have a fourth on Saturday (Palos Verdes). We schedule these games so our kids can learn how to compete against the best. Tonight, we learned quite a bit. Now, we have to go back and make the best of what we learned."

Next up for the Sea Kings are the Patriots of Beckman today at 5:30 PM at CDM.
