The real Sea Kings defeat the other Sea Kings 12-9

#5 seed CDM will face #12 NHHS in Battle of the Bay re-match
On a very sunny and warm afternoon atop the Palos Verdes peninsula, the "real" Sea KIngs of CDM reigned supreme over the "other" Sea Kings of PV High with an impressive 12-9 win. Shortly after the inter-county win in its last regular season game, CDM secured the #5 seed in the US Lacrosse Orange County Championship tournament which begins Tuesday, May 3rd.

On Tuesday, the Sea Kings (14-4, 10-0) will face local rival and #12 seed Newport Harbor (8-9, 2-4) at 4:00 PM at Corona del Mar High School.

"I was pleased with the way we played this afternoon," said CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "These guys are always a very tough opponent, it's a long bus ride and today's weather was not very forgiving. I thought we responded very well to all of those challenges."

The Kings were lead by Hunter Molnar (Jr. Attack) with four goals and an assists and Connor Canale (Jr./Attack) with three goals and two assists. Michael Keasey (Jr./Midfield) and Connor Gaal (Jr./Midfield) added two goals each. Michael Ortlieb had another excellent outing between the pipes, recording 14 saves (.608%).

The big story of the day was, once again, the improved play of CDM's face-off unit. Taylor Epp and his wingmen combined to secure 17 of 23 face-offs (.739%).

"Coming into today's game, we were very concerned about the competition for face-off possessions," commented Mix. "Zack Henkhaus (Palos Verdes) is one of the best face-off kids in Southern California. The kids have been working hard recently to clean up this aspect of our game. That work really paid off today. We were able to gain valuable possessions which prevented them from going on too many multiple goal runs."

With the win, CDM improves to 14-4 overall.

Next up are the Sailors of Newport Harbor in the first round of the Orange County playoffs.

When asked about the first-round match-up, coach Mix seemed concerned, yet comfortable. "I am excited about the match-up with Newport Harbor," said Mix. "In past years, our first round opponents were not nearly as strong as Harbor is. They are well-coached and their kids play hard. They are a quality team and we will have to fight hard and play smart to advance. I think its always nice when you have a good band to get the party started."
