Kings defeat Sailors 13-9 to survive and advance

Seniors Parker Ewles, John Prickett and Donald Dalton celebrate 13-9 win over rival Newport Harbor
After an emotional first half and trailing 6-5, the Sea Kings settled down and outscored Newport Harbor 8-3 in the second half to survive and advance to the second round of the 2011 Orange County Championship playoff tournament by defeating a pesky Newport Harbor team 13-9.

Michael Keasey (Jr./Midfield) led the way with three goals and an assist. Parker Ewles (Sr./Midfield) refused to let his senior season come to an end against the Sailors, adding a goal and three assists. Connor Canale (Jr./Attack) continued to adjust to his new role as an attackman, scoring three goals. Connor Gaal (Jr./Midfield) added two goals and an assist and Jack Ortlieb (So./Attack) found the back of the Sailors net twice.

"It was a very tough draw for us," added CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "We knew the moment it was announced, we had a significant challenge ahead of us. A # 5 vs a #12 seed is not really a # 5 vs a #12 seed when its CDM vs Newport Harbor. The last time we played, they were without Riley Robinson and we had Casey Mix. This time, it was the opposite. Thankfully, our kids responded to the challenge. I think our young men appreciated the situation, dug deep, and found a way to overcome a stockpile of adversity."

The Kings scored the first two goals, but the Sailors responded and jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in the second quarter. A determined CDM squad responded with better play at both ends and eventually outscored Newport 11-4 over the next three periods to seal the first-round playoff victory.

Junior Michael Ortlieb (Jr./Goalie) found his groove in the second half, recording 18 saves (.692%) and holding the Sailors to just three second half goals.

Former Surf Dawg Jake Turner led all Newport Harbor scorers with six goals. "It was great to see some of those kids compete at such a high level," added Mix. "I had the privilege of coaching their top 6 or 7 players throughout their youth lacrosse experience and it was with mixed emotion I watched them step up and contribute so much in such a big game."

With the win this afternoon, CDM improves it's CIF record over Newport Harbor to 5-0 (since boys lacrosse became a CIF sport at both schools in 2007). Sea King head coach G.W. Mix's career record is now 3-0 over Newport Harbor, while Sailor head coach Mark Todd falls to 0-2 against his former team.

Next up for Corona del Mar is San Clemente in the quarter-finals. The Kings travel south to take on the #4 seeded Tritons (12-4) on Thursday evening, May 5th, at 7:00 PM at San Clemente High School.
