Sea Kings announce 2012 varsity game schedule

CDM celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2012
The Sea KIngs have announced their 2012 varsity lacrosse schedule. Highlights include games with traditional Orange County rivals and a 3-day trip to San Francisco in mid-April to play in the Jerry Langkammerer Invitational at St. Ignatius.

"We are extremely excited about our 2012 schedule," said CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "In addition to the opportunity to battle for a fifth straight PCL Championship, we will encounter most of the top programs in Orange County and have added an appearance in St. Ignatius' tournament in San Francisco. It should be a challenging and exciting year."

This year, the Kings will open with three consecutive Pacific Coast League games, beginning on March 5 at Irvine and returning home the following week to play University on March 12 and Irvine again on March 13.

On Saturday, March 17, CDM plays traditional Trinity League power Santa Margarita Catholic in a crucial non-conference match-up.

"Our game with Santa Margarita will give us a pretty fair indication early in the season of where we are and help us identify areas in which we need to improve for a run later in the season," said Mix. "They will be very talented and well-prepared."

After a PCL game at home against Northwood, the Sea Kings will meet Colorado powerhouse Mullen at Peninsula Park on Friday, March 23. A top program in Colorado, the Mustangs lost 6-5 late in 2011 to eventual state champion Regis Jesuit.

"We are really looking forward to hosting Mullen during their spring break trip to Southern California," commented Mix. "They are going to be a handful and will give our kids a great chance to compete at a very high level."

After a March 26 game with Woodbridge, the Kings face cross-town rival Newport Harbor on Satuday, March 31 at CDM.

"Our game with Newport Harbor is always a special one, Mix added. "They are talented and well-coached and we have a very interesting history with their program. I have had the privilege of coaching most of their top players throughout their careers, beginning with Surf Dawgs and more recently in our elite team program. Our kids are rivals, friends and great teammates. We all know how meaningful this game is to everyone involved."

After the Battle of the Bay, the first week of April includes two league games with Beckman and Northwood. The following week is one of the biggest of the season with El Toro at CDM on Tuesday, April 10, followed by three games against highly ranked regional opponents in San Francisco on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

"We are honored to have been invited to participate in the Jerry Langkammerer Invitational at St. Ignatius. The tournament will include top teams from San Diego, Northern California, Oregon, and Washington. It should be great competition and a terrific opportunity for us to continue to develop and improve as a team."

After returning from San Francisco, there will be no rest for the weary. On Tuesday, April 17, the Kings face long-time Orange County rival St. Margaret's, travel to a PCL game the next day against Woodbridge, and close out the week with an important non-conference game against Huntington Beach on Saturday, April 21.

The Sea Kings close out the regular season the following week with league games against University and Beckman.

The 16-team US Lacrosse Orange County playoff tournament will begin on Tuesday, May 1.
