"Defend The Crown" concussion program set to begin
CDM lacrosse has launched a comprehensive concussion management program
Beginning with the 2012 season, the CDM boys lacrosse program will launch a comprehensive concussion manangement program. The Sea Kings hope the newly established "Defend The Crown" program will pave the way for better education and care for CDM student-athletes who may suffer a concussive sports injury.
"Concussions are a a real threat to the health and safety of student-athletes in all sports," commented CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "The recent focus on these types of sports injuries by powerful organizations like the NFL, NHL and the NCAA have helped to bring greater awareness about the issue to all levels of athletic participation. We are hopeful our effort will improve education and increase awareness on our campus and throughout the high school sports community."
CDM's Defend The Crown program is the result of several years of the lacrosse staff paying closer attention to the issue and working to devlop a plan to better manage concussions and post-concussion care. Paul Lacanilao, the Sea Kings head athletics trainer from 2009-2011, was instrumental in establishing and following a sensible concussion injury protocol. More recently, under the direction of current head trainer Jackie McKindley, the lacrosse program began to formulate a policy all parties could follow in the event of a concussive injury. Last month, Cindy Brahs, a CDM parent and member of the CDM PTA Board approached the lacrosse program and offered the Board's help to fund ImPACT baseline testing for CDM's student-athletes.
"When Cindy and the PTA Board approached us and offered to help fund ImPACT testing for lacrosse players, it brought the program's development and implementation back to the forefront for us," Mix added. "We understood the time was now. We stopped focussing on other elements within the program for a week or two in order to finalize all aspects of our concussion management program. I am really proud of our kids and our staff, as I think we are presenting a model program from which so many student-athletes will benefit in the future."
Prior to the start of the season, all members of the CDM lacrosse program underwent computerized online testing with ImPACT to establish a neurocognitive baseline. In the event a student-athlete suffers a concussion, a follow-up ImPACT test provides computerized neurocognitive assessment tools and services that are used by medical doctors, psychologists, athletic trainers, and other licensed healthcare professionals to assist them in determining an athlete's ability to return to play after suffering a concussion.
ImPACT testing is just one element of CDM's program. The medical staff and coaches developed a comprehensive Policy & Procedure Manual so everyone involved in the process will have a solid understanding of his or her role in helping the student-athlete recover. Better education of the student-athletes, the coaches and the parents is critical to having a successful concussion management program, so there are educational components and post-concssion home care instructions included in the program as well.
The program is under the medical direction of Dr. David Kruse, M.D., a primary care sports medicine physician at the Orthopaedic Specialty Institute, and CDM boys lacrosse head trainer Jackie McKindley.
"We are extremely confident in the quality of medical care our players receive at CDM," coach Mix said. "The addition of Dr. Kruse to our program adds a wealth of experience in the area of concussion management. As a former student-athlete, he understands the athlete's desire to return to competition as soon as possible, but his experience and expertise allows him to make that decision only when its prudent regarding the athlete's health and safety."
