CDM Class of 2010 defeats Class of 2011 in Philly
Ryan Mix (CDM '10) and Donald Dalton (CDM '11) after Notre Dame's 6-5 win at Drexel
In what will likely be the first of many future NCAA Division I confrontations between former Sea King players, Ryan Mix (CDM Class of 2010) and the #9 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeated Donald Dalton (CDM Class of 2011) and the #18 ranked Drexel Dragons 6-5 on Saturday in Philadelphia.
Mix, a sophomore attackman at Notre Dame, returned to his birthplace of Philadelphia to help the Irish win their second game of the season. His father, CDM lacrosse coach G.W. Mix, played at Penn and spent an additional nine years as an assistant and head coach for the Quakers. During that time, Ryan was born in at University hospital in Philadelphia in 1991.
Since becoming a CIF sport in 2007, CDM has placed five players in NCAA Division I programs, college lacrosse's elite level of competition. At that rate, these CDM lacrosse alumni match-ups in college may begin to become more commonplace than happenstance.
"It is unreal to be able to play against former teammates at the Division I level," Ryan Mix commented after the game. "For a high school from a non-hotbed area to place five players into Division I programs is simply astonishing. It proves that the hard work and culture established at CDM is not only effective but excelling."
Mix and Dalton were able to get together briefly after the game before the Irish headed to the airport for the return flight to South Bend, but it was their meeting the night before, however, that makes for a better story.
The Irish left their team hotel on Friday evening for the brief two block walk to their team dinner at Maggiano's, a local Italian restaurant. While entering the private room set up for the Irish, Mix noticed what appeared to be another team dining in the room next door. He texted Dalton and learned it was him and his Drexel teammates.
"We texted back and forth and coordinated a bathroom break," Dalton said with that classic mischievous Dalton grin. "It was good to get together and talk a little bit."
The next regular season alumni confrontation will take place when Notre Dame hosts Rutgers on 3/25 in South Bend. Blake Burkhart (CDM Class of 2010 / Deerfield Class of 2011) is a freshman at Rutgers and has quickly ascended to become the Scarlet Knights top face-off midfielder.
A post-season match-up between Notre Dame, Drexel, or Rutgers against former CDM midfielder Noah Molnar (CDM Class of 2009) and Lehigh is a real possibility in the NCAA Tournament. Lehigh upset #19 Penn 10-4 and #4 North Carolina 9-8 last week, making them an early favorite to make the NCAA field of 16.
