Sea Kings open season with dominant win at Irvine
Senior goalie Michael Ortlieb led the Sea King defense in its 18-0 shut-out win.
In defense of their Pacific Coast League crown, the Sea Kings made a strong statement Monday night with a convincing 18-0 win at Irvine. Senior goalie Michael Ortlieb anchored CDM's defense and junior attackmen Jack Ortlieb (3 goals / 3 assists) and Casey Mix (5 goals) contributed a combined eleven points in the team's 2012 opener.
"I thought we got off to a pretty good start," commented CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "Our offense did a terrific job of setting the tone early, getting some good looks and finishing the opportunities they created."
CDM's offense was impressive early, scoring on ten of their first eleven shots and establishing a 10-0 lead by the close of the first quarter. During the initial barrage, senior midfielder Michael Keasey recorded two goals and an assist, Jack Ortlieb added 3 goals and an assist, Mix netted a pair, senior attackman Hunter Molnar scored and assisted on two other tallies, while junior midfielders Brett Nelson and Chris Von Der Ahe each added a goal.
"I was pleased with the way our offense began the game. Jeremy has them playing well together. We got quite a lot of production out of a lot of guys tonight."
Jeremy Sieverts, a former University of Maryland and current Denver Outlaws midfielder, has recently joined the CDM coaching staff and works primarily with the offense. He is joined on the staff by another newcomer, former Hobart All-American defenseman Devin Arkison, whose defense recorded an opening night shutout.
One significant note on the evening was the return to action for senior midfielder Jack Gorab and junior attackman Casey Mix, both of whom missed the end of the 2011 season due to injury. Their return was highlighted by their performance, as Mix found the net five times and Gorab generated two goals an assist.
Taylor Epp, the Sea Kings' senior face-off specialist, dominated the entire evening, winning 13 of 19 draws.
