Keasey, Molnar and Ortlieb named 2012 captains
Senior attackman Hunter Molnar was named team captain along with Keasey and Ortlieb
Super Tuesday 2012 may have included seven GOP presidential primary elections, but it also served as the date of another very important vote in the Sea Kings lacrosse locker room.
In a vote by members of the 2012 varsity lacrosse team, seniors Michael Keasey and Hunter Molnar were elected team captains for the 2012 season. Senior Michael Ortlieb is a returning team captain from the 2011 squad and will continue his leadership role in 2012.
"The team did an excellent job in identifying its captains," said head coach G.W. Mix. "Over the past eight years, I have had the honor of watching from the sidelines as these three kids have developed into terrific players and admirable young men. They represent what our program is all about - hard work, respect for the game, and brotherhood. I imagine all three are proud to serve their teammates as captains but remain humbled by the process."
Ortlieb, a two-year starter in the goal, demonstrated his penchant for leadership after his sophomore season when he gave up a promising career as an attackman to step between the pipes as a junior. The risk was significant, but he worked tirelessly to ensure there would be reward in the end. In the fall, Ortlieb will take his talents east to the Boston area to play Division I lacrosse at Holy Cross.
"What Michael has accomplished in such a short period of time is remarkable," Mix said. "He has been extremely dedicated to his craft and it shows. He's talented, intense and leads our defense. He possesses all of the qualities inherent in the best collegiate goalies. Holy Cross is very fortunate, the rest of them, not so much."
Keasey is one of the most dominant midfielders in Southern California. In the Sea King's 2011 campaign, he recorded 52 goals and 15 assists to lead all Sea King scorers. His talents did not go unnoticed by the best programs in the east. This past fall, he accepted an offer to play collegiate lacrosse at Yale University.
"Michael Keasey has worked as hard as anyone I have ever coached to improve his skills as a lacrosse player," Mix commented. "Countless hours running, lifting, shooting and watching college game film has enabled him to rise to a level above most. Our program is proud to have him go on to represent us at the game's highest level, even if it is at Yale (Mix also played in the Ivy League at Penn)."
Prior to returning for his senior lacrosse season, Molnar, a two-sport student-athlete, helped lead the Sea King's to the 2011 CIF Southern Section football championship. In 2011, as an attackman, he was second in scoring for CDM with 47 goals and 15 assists.
"I am so pleased and proud Hunter's teammates have recognized and acknowleged his quiet leadership," added Mix. "I have had the pleasure of watching him grow and develop through the years, from witnessing his bar mitzvah to watching him return to football as a senior and help CDM win a championship. As an athlete, he works extremely hard and gets the most out of himself, but his special gift is his ability to weave friendships and unify a group."
Next week, tri-captains Keasey, Molnar and Ortlieb will lead the Sea Kings into their first home game on Monday, March 12 against University at 3:15 PM.
