Kings Overpower Mullen
CDM faced off Friday afternoon against Mullin High School, one of the top programs from the Denver area. It was obvious from the opening draw that Mullin came to play. They were able to move the ball and get some nice shots on offense and ride a hot goalie to a 4-1 lead.
With Coach Mix back east it looked like the Sea Kings might be in for a long day, but the character of the program kicked in late in the second quarter with a furious rally just before the half.
Jack Ortlieb started the party with 1:20 left in the first half with a goal followed by a huge tally by Hunter Molnar with 21 seconds left. In the start of the second half Michael Ortlieb was simply on fire. His 2 saves at point blank range were game changers, and seconds later Jack Ortlieb fired a bullet into the back of the cage making the Mullin goalie pay. "It was a wild turn of events", stated coach Arkison (Devo). "One minute we were down 2 and with the rally at the end of the half and the start of the second we were up a goal in about 2 minutes of play!"
From there on it was mostly CDM. The defense clamped down and the transition game was sparked by Michael Keasey who had 4 assists and a goal on the day. They took it to 8-4, finishing 9-7 for the win.
Coach Jeremy Sieverts had a big day filling in for Coach Mix. "We knew we were getting looks and the shots would fall if we kept composure, we just needed to do what we do" he stated post game.
Taylor Epp once again dominated face offs.
