Sea Kings improve to 7-0 in Pacific Coast League

Senior defensive midfielder Kyle Sherburne scored his first career goal in 16-2 win at Northwood
After a convincing 10-4 win over Newport Harbor on Saturday, CDM (10-0 / 7-0) continued to roll with two lopsided wins in the Pacific Coast League. On Monday, the Sea Kings disarmed the Patriots with a 17-10 win at Beckman. Yesterday, they followed up by soundly defeating the Timberwolves of Northwood 16-2.

"Monday's win was a good one for us," commented CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "We were able to build a very solid lead early on and take advantage of the opportunity that gave us to develop some depth and experience along our bench for most of the second half."

The Sea Kings jumped out to a six goal lead (8-2) in the first quarter, increased the lead to seven goals early in the second quarter and, despite mass substitutions in the second half, never relinquished the margin. The attack seemed to lead the charge most of the afternoon, accounting for nine of the team's seventeen goals.

Jack Ortlieb (Jr / Attack) had three goals and two assists, Casey Mix (Jr / Attack) added two goals and five assists, Hunter Molnar (Sr / Attack) notched two goals and an assist, and Todd Kitzens (Jr / Attack) and Ben Palitz (Fr / Attack) each added one goal.

Michael Keasey (Sr / Midfield) paced the KIngs' midfielders with two goals and an assist. Brett Nelson (Jr / Midfield) and Chris Von Der Ahe (Jr / Midfield) each added a pair of goals. Jay Damon (So / Midfield) and Aaron Khosh (Sr / Midfield) had a goal apiece.

Taylor Epp (Sr / Midfield) continued to dominate face-offs, winning 22 of 28 draws (.785%).

On Wednesday, CDM defeated Northwood 16-2 in its second and final meeting with the Timberwolves. The Sea Kings won the first meeting between the schools 12-2 on March 19th.

"One of the better performances out there today was the Northwood goalie," Mix said. "He made quite a few saves in the first half and forced us to re-evaluate how and where we were shooting the ball. He is by far the second best goalie we have seen in the league (behind CDM senior goalie Michael Ortlieb)."

The half-time shooting adjustments paid off. After holding a 7-2 lead at half-time, the Sea King offense exploded in the early going of the third quarter, scoring six goals in the first five and a half minutes.

Once again, the Kings were able to give everyone a chance to compete in the contest. Defensive midfield specialist Kyle Sherburne scored his first career goal while playing offense at the end of the third period.

"It was great to see 'Psycho' (Kyle Sherburne) get that goal," Mix added. "He and Frasier (senior midfielder Frasier Anderson) work so hard on defense all game long. They rarely get the glory. Its fun to see them get to celebrate scoring a goal with their teammates."

It was another showcase day for the Sea King attack. Casey Mix (Jr / Attack) led all scorers with five goals and two assists. Hunter Molnar (Sr / Attack) had three goals and two assists, Jack Ortlieb (Jr / Attack) added three goals, Todd Kitzens (Jr / Attack) recorded a goal and an assist, and Ben Palitz (Fr / Attack) added a goal.

At midfield, in addition to Sherburne's goal, Brett Nelson (Jr / Midfield) added two goals, Michael Keasey (Sr / Midfield) notched two assists, and Chris Von Der Ahe had one assist.

"We are playing very unselfishly on offense," Mix said. "The majority of our goals are assisted, which is a pretty good indication what we are trying to do offensively is working. There are a number of kids out there, like Connor Canale (Sr / Midfield) and Taylor Epp (Sr / Midfield), who don't always score the goals, but are every bit as critical to our success."

The pair of league wins this week improves the Kings' record to 10-0 overall and 7-0 in the Pacific Coast League.

"These were two more league wins which we value," head coach Mix said mid-week. "But the wins we value most are the ones we will fight for in the next two weeks. Those are the games that will tell us where we really are at this point in the season."

On Tuesday, the Sea KIngs play host to local Orange County power El Toro, a team that defeated CDM in its season opener in 2011. On Wednesday, they board a bus for San Francisco where they will partcipate in the Jerry Langkammerer Invitational at St. Ignatius Prep. In San Francisco, the Kings play Menlo Prep on Thursday, Marin Catholic on Friday and Bellarmine on Saturday. Shortly after they return home, CDM will host rival St. Margaret's on Tueday, April 17.
