Kings handle El Toro 14-4; head to San Francisco
Senior midfielder Michael Keasey led the way for the Sea Kings with 5 goals and an assist.
After somewhat of a slow start, CDM's offense rallied in the second quarter to take a 7-2 lead at the half, and the Sea Kings eventually rolled over visiting El Toro 14-4. Sporting their new "gold crowns" in honor of the school's fiftieth anniversary, CDM improved its overall record to 11-0.
"El Toro did a terrific job on defense in the first quarter," CDM head coach G.W. Mix commented shortly after the game. "They are well-coached and did some nice things. We kept telling the kids to be patient and the shots would eventually fall."
And fall they did. With the score tied 1-1 at the end of the first period (on a goal by senior attackman Hunter Molnar), the Sea Kings looked to be in a tighter game than most Orange County lacrosse fans had expected. But the offense started to click and the game was quickly beyond El Toro's reach. Casey Mix (Jr / Attack) found Michael Keasey (Sr / Midfield) twice in less than ninety seconds and Jack Gorab (Sr / Midfield) three minutes later to give CDM a quick 4-1 lead. Senior midfielder Brett Nelson added two more goals and Molnar scored one more time to help build what became an insurmountable 7-2 halftime lead.
"It was a terrific display of unselfish offense this afternoon. At one point in the third quarter, we had a possession of nearly five minutes and took 13 shots. It was pretty impressive."
Keasey added two more goals in the third quarter and one in the fourth to bring his total for the day to five goals and an assist. Casey Mix scored his first goal of the game in the third period and added an assist to bring his total to one goal and five assists. Molnar finished the afternoon with three goals, Todd Kitzens (Jr / Attack) and Chase McElroy (Jr / Midfield) with a goal apiece, and Jack Ortlieb (Jr / Attack) added an assist.
"We got another outstanding performance from our defense," Mix added. "Michael was solid in the goal and the rest of the guys played well. We are really looking forward to seeing how well we meet the challenges we are going to face up in San Francisco."
Taylor Epp continued his face-off dominance, winning 14 of 20 draws.
The Kings depart Wednesday morning for San Francisco where they wil play 3 games in as many days in the Jerry Langkammerer Invitational at St. Ignatius.
