CDM dominates Woodbridge 16-4 in PCL action.
Junior attackman Casey Mix had a goal and five assists to lead the Sea Kings
Less than twenty-four hours after an impressive win over St. Margaret's, the Sea Kings dominated host Woodbridge 16-4 in a Pacific Coast League game.
Senior midfielder Michael Keasey, scored four first half goals to lead CDM to its eighth PCL win of the season, improving its record to 15-0, 8-0 in conference play. Casey Mix (Jr/Attack) notched a goal and added five assists on the afternoon. Fellow attackmen Hunter Molnar (Sr/Attack) and Jack Ortlieb (Jr/Attack) added 3 goals apiece.
The real story of the game was the multitude of Warrior penalties, most for dangerous and illegal contact.
CDM took advantage of those Warrior penalties, scoring on seven of ten extra-man opportunities. Woodbridge had a combined thirteen and a half minutes of penalties, more than a quarter's worth, including two illegal body checks to the head, three slashing penalties, a late hit, a cross check and one unecessary roughness penalty. One player was ejected in the fourth quarter following his second two-minute major for an illegal hit to the head. He was also called for an illegal cross-check five minutes earlier in the quarter.
"I have been coaching for thirty years," CDM head Coach Mix commented. "I can count on one hand the number of times I have seen a player foul out of a lacrosse game, at any level, including the MLL (Major League Lacrosse - the sport's professional league). At some point, the onus falls upon a head coach to control the type of play exhibited by his players. There has been a consistent and concerning theme in all of our games with Woodbridge."
"It's unfortunate some developing programs teach their players that the object of the game is to hit high, hit late and hit often. Woodbridge has some good athletes who seem to want to compete, but rather than teaching them fundamentals of the game, their coaches seem to choose to focus solely on the physical elements and commend players for unecessary roughness and illegal contact. It's silly and its dangerous. Coaches coach what they know I guess, but you'd think after losing two games by a combined 25 goals, they would consider learning how to teach the game a different way."
With the win, CDM remains undefeated in league play (8-0) and inches closer to a fifth consecutive PCL championship. The Kings face University at University HS on Monday at 4:45 PM and host Beckman on Wednesday at 3:30 PM in the Pacific Coast League finale.
This Saturday, the Sea Kings travel to Huntington Beach to take on the Oilers. Huntington (6-5) is currently ranked 9th in Orange County.
