CDM rests starters; dominates University 18-5

Senior midfielder Aaron Khosh had two goals in CDM's 18-5 win at University
After a tough two weeks, including seven games in fourteen days, CDM's coaching staff felt they needed to give the Sea Kings' starters a rest. They chose to do so in today's PCL match-up with University. The result was a convincing 18-5 win over the Trojans.

"I have considered doing this for a few years and have never felt comfortable doing it," said CDM head coach Mix. "This is a special group of kids. They all work hard and do whatever we ask of them. We decided to ask our second group to go out and win a game for us. They did a great job and made us look good."

Todd Kitzens (Jr/Attack) led all scorers with three goals and an assist.

"We are really counting on Todd to play a significant role for us in the playoffs and in 2013. He has really come on this spring and we challenged him to lead this young group today. He did a great job."

In addition to Kitzens, Chase McElroy (Jr/Midfield) and Ben Palitz (Fr/Attack) also recorded hat tricks. CDM outshot University 42-15 throughout the day, shooting .428% to just .250% for the host Trojans.

Junior attackman Beau Goulding had two goals and an assist, while senior midfielder Aaron Khosh had a pair of goals for the Sea Kings.

"I don't think we shot particularly well in the first quarter," Mix added. "Some of that is a lack of experience and poise. Fortunately, it got better as the game wore on."

Junior midfielder Chris Von Der Ahe and sophomore Jay Damon each had a goal and an assist, while Rocky Feinberg (Jr/Attack) and defensive midfielders, turned offensive threats, Kyle Sherburne and Frasier Anderson each scored fourth quarter goals.

Freshman Sherwin Gersten and junior Chase McElroy combined efforts to take over the face-off duties for Taylor Epp (Sr/Midfield), winning 15 of 26 face-offs (.576%).

After a shaky start, the defense did a terrific job, holding University to just two goals over the final three quarters.

"I really thought Grant (Grant Garrett), Greg (Greg Allen) and Jimmy (Jimmy McKray) did a nice job today. Once they got into a rhythm, they really shut down the Trojan offense. Bobby (Bobby Brooks), Daniel McCabe and Carter Keddington did a nice job up top as well."

Allen also recorded an assist, while fellow defensive midfielder McCabe had two.

In addition to the starting group, senior Matt Burt, freshman Brett Greenlee, junior Jordan Salisbury and sophomore Jack Ewles combined to stifle University's offense for the balance of the game.

"The future looks pretty bright for us in the goal as well," Mix added.

Senior goalie Nolan Johnson started in place of classmate Michael Ortlieb, earning four saves and allowing just four Trojan scores (.500%). Freshman Hoyt Crance handled the duties between the pipes for the second half, notching six saves and allowing only one goal (.857%).

"This was a great day for our program. We were able to reach very deep into our team and get guys to perform at a high level. This is only going to help us in the long run."

On Wednesday, CDM faces Beckman at home at 3:15 PM for the Pacific Coast League championship. A win would give the Sea Kings its fifth straight PCL title and improve its record to 19-0.
