Five Crowns; CDM wins fifth consecutive PCL title
Junior attackman Jack Ortlieb had a goal and an assist in CDM's 16-2 win over Beckman
CDM finished the regular season undefeated (19-0) with a 16-2 win over the visiting Beckman Patriots (14-3). With the victory, the Sea Kings clinched their fifth straight Pacific Coast League title.
Six different players scored as CDM took a 7-0 half-time lead. Senior midfielder Michael Keasey opened the scoring and was quickly followed by Jack Ortlieb (Jr/Attack), Hunter Molnar (Sr/Attack) with two goals, Casey Mix (Jr/Attack), Jack Gorab (Sr/Midfield), and Connor Canale (Sr/Midfield).
After returning to the field, the Kings exploded for seven goals in the third quarter. Behind outstanding team defense, they held Beckman scoreless until 6:03 remaining in the game.
"This was a good win for us," said CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "Beckman was 14-2 coming into the game and I thought the kids did a good job of leaving no doubt about the level at which we are playing right now."
"We had a lot of diiferent kids score goals for us this afternoon and that should build some confidence in our offense heading into next week's playoffs. I thought the defense played pretty well. I don't care who you are playing, if you can keep the ball out of the net for the first 42 minutes of a 48 minute game, you are playing prety good defense."
At 19-0, with nine impressive non-conference wins, the Sea Kings will likely earn the top seed and host a first round game in the 2012 US Lacrosse Southern Section playoff tournament which begins next Tuesday.
"Going undefeated in the regular season is a significant accomplishment," Mix responded when asked about the first undefeated season in CDM lacrosse history. "But it means absolutely nothing on Tuesday. The other 15 teams in the tournament could care less about it and each team we face will be anxious to change our fortune. Whether we enter the tournament 19-0 or 10-9 the stakes remain the same. Win and advance or lose and go home. Our regular season record will be irrelevant."
The Sea Kings have won the Pacific Coast League title in all five years it has been a lacrosse member of the league. Of those championships, all five were undefeated league seasons, giving CDM and overal PCL record of 48-0, with an average margin of victory of 14.4 goals. In its 2012 championship run, CDM scored 167 goals (16.7/game) and allowed just 28 (2.8/game).
"We told the kids yesterday there is no need to apologize for what they have done. Other schools, players and coaches are quick to criticize us for the league in which we play. That's just not fair. We didn't put the league together, we just play in it. For a number of years, our kids have been extremely dedicated to building a championship caliber program at CDM. They have worked very hard to accomplish that. If it were not for their tireless effort, might be be just another average or below average lacrosse program. If you put these kids' historical lacrosse accomplishments and this year's nine non-conference wins up against anybody else's, I think it would be pretty impressive."
