OC lacrosse suffers tragic loss of HB player
Huntington Beach senior Tyler Macleod lost his battle with drug addiction late last month.
Tyler Macleod, 18 and a senior lacrosse player at Huntington Beach High School, died of an apparent heroin overdose on September 24. According to the Orange County Register, he is one of several teens who have succumbed to the drug in recent months in Huntington Beach, prompting a community outcry for action from school, city and police officials.
"This is a very sad time for Orange County lacrosse and a very scary time for parents and educators," commented CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "Our hearts go out to his family, friends, teammates and coaches. I am always deeply saddened when young kids find themselves so troubled."
Upon learning the news last week, the CDM coaches chose a post-practice huddle in which to speak openly with the kids about the circumstances surrounding Macleod's death.
"It is fairly easy, and a hell of a lot more comfortable, to ignore such a tragic event," Mix added. "We told the kids we don't think it's wise for any of us to take the position it could never happen here, not to one of us, not to one of our friends. I'm sure, at some point, Tyler's family and friends felt that way about their situation and it changed dramatically."
"As coaches, we felt compelled to try and find some useful purpose for such a senseless tragedy. We spent quite a bit of time talking to the kids on Thursday about our responsibility to each other. Everyone needs to be more vigilant. We told them to keep a watchful eye on one another, and to let someone know if you sense something is abnormal. It's empowering to know you can truly make a difference in someone's life. Peer pressure has so many negative connotations, particularly in high school, but it can also be used very effectively to help friends and teammates make better, safer decisions."
The Sea Kings will wear memorial helmet decals honoring Tyler this spring.
"We will wear the decals out of respect for Tyler's teammates, family and friends. They will also serve as a constant reminder of the responsibility we share for the welfare of our teammates."
