CDM opens 2013 campaign with 17-3 win
Senior attackman Casey Mix scored 6 goals and added 2 assists in the first half of CDM's 17-3 win.
Corona del Mar began its 2013 campaign, just as it did a year ago, with a convincing season opening win over Irvine University. Sloppy at times, CDM led Uni 4-2 at the end of the first quarter, then outscored them 10-0 in the second, to take a significant 14-2 lead into the break.
"We got off to a fairly rough start in the first quarter," said CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "There are a number of new faces in new places for us out there and it showed. Once we settled down and stopped trying to do more than was necessary, we began to play at a higher level."
Senior attackman Todd Kitzens opened the scoring for CDM, netting the Sea King's first two goals of the season, both coming off assists from Casey Mix (Sr/Attack). Shortly after Kitzens' goals, Mix (6 goals/2 assists) and fellow senior attackman Jack Ortlieb (4 goals/3 assists) began a barrage of their own, combining to score 10 of the next 12 Sea King goals. At half-time, Mix and Ortlieb left the game for good, with a combined total of 10 goals and 5 assists on the day.
Brett Nelson (Sr./Midfield) added a goal and four other Sea Kings: Nino Chavez (So/Midfield), Max Kline (So/Attack), Chad Redfearn (So/Midfield) and Andrew Schmidt (So/Midfield) scored their first career goals for CDM. Chavez and Kline each added an assist, as did Jay Damon (Jr/Midfield) and Sherwin Gersten (So/Midfield).
Sophomore goalie Hoyt Crance recorded eight saves (.727% / 3.0 GA). Utilizing a combination of Nino Chavez (So/Midfield) and Kaden Ebbinga (Jr/Midfield), the Sea Kings dominated the face-offs, winning 18 of 24 total draws (.750%).
"Overall it was a decent start for us, fairly predictable in its outcome and level of performance. It was good to be able to make wholesale substitutions at the half and get some of the younger and less-experienced guys some live game work. We have much left to do and less time in which to do it, but we will find our way.""We got off to a fairly rough start in the first quarter," said CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "I was really impressed with the University kids," Mix added. "They honored the game. They played hard from begining to end, which is not an easy thing to do under those circumstances."
Up next, the Sea Kings travel to Sage Hill School for a Friday evening game at 6:00 PM against the Lightning (0-1 / vs. San Juan Hills on 3/5).
