Kings prove too sage for the Lightning.
Senior attackman Jack Ortlieb, and the rest of the Sea Kings, were relentless against Sage Hill.
On a crisp evening atop Sage Hill, the Sea Kings (2-0) proved to be too much for the Lightning, defeating the hosts 15-2. Led by its "sage" senior attack trio, CDM jumped out to a 10-1 halftime lead, and the reserves finished the task, outscoring Sage Hill 5-1 to finish the game.
"It's about what we expected," said CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "Chris (Chris Disimile, Sage Hill head coach) does a nice job with their kids, but he is limited in numbers. We knew we could put pressure on them and cause quite a few turnovers."
Pressure is an understatement. The Sea Kings were relentless in their pursuit of ground balls, and seemed to apply defensive pressure to Sage Hill all over the field, allowing less than a handful of shots the entire game.
"I thought we did a fairly good job of playing at the speed we wanted and making them uncomfortable with the ball. We made it difficult for them to get anything going, which was our intent. Playing at that speed, in that big of an area, gave us the opportunity to get much more out of the game than we would have if we played them straight up."
The Sea Kings were able to limit Sage Hill's possessions with terrific play at the face-off X. CDM dominated face-offs (17-2 / .894%), using a combination of sophomore Nino Chavez (10-1), junior Kaden Ebbinga (4-1) and senior Jake Wyatt (3-0).
"We have made the face-offs a focal point in practice and it is beginning to pay off for us. I thought we got great work out of our face-off guys and solid support from the wings."
Senior Jack Ortlieb led CDM scorers with five goals and a pair of assists. Fellow seniors Todd Kitzens (2 goals/1 assist), Casey Mix (3 goals/4 assists) and Brett Nelson (2 goals/1 assist) added to the tally. Max Kline (So/Midfield) and Ben Palitz (So/Midfield) added a goal each, while Logan Miller (So/Midfield) recorded his first career goal for the Sea Kings. Sophomore midfielder Sherwin Gersten had an assist.
Sage Hill's junior goalie David Swerdlow was the lone bright spot for the Lightning, recording 17 saves, some of the spectacular variety.
"David stood on his head. He used to play in our youth program (Newport Beach Surf Dawgs)," Mix said. "He was terrific tonight. He forced us to take good shots and made us pay when we did not. I can't speak to his consistency, but tonight he was one of the better goalies we have played against the past few years."
With such a lopsided result, it is easy to wonder why CDM would play an opponent like Sage Hill?
"We decided to play them for a number of reasons," Mix explained. "Chris is a good guy and he teaches the game the right way. Also, Sage Hill and CDM share a similar vision with respect to the value and importance of academic excellence. Lastly, we think it makes sense to play all of the teams in our area, which we do now with games against Huntington, Newport, Los Al, Sage and Mater Dei."
Up next for the Sea Kings will be their home opener against former PCL rival Beckman, Wednesday at 3:15 PM at CDM.
