CDM scores 8 unanswered to cap Oilers 10-7.

Senior attackman Jack Ortlieb lies buried in the dirt while his shot lies buried in the net.
At the end of the first quarter, the visiting Huntington Beach Oilers (9-2) looked poised to dethrone the host Sea Kings, but another trademarked CDM run, this time 8 unanswered goals, effectively quieted the visitors.

"Huntington had a lot of energy early," commented Sea King head coach G.W. Mix. "We expected them to be excited about the opportunity and knew we would get their best effort. The played very well and at the end of the first quarter I think they felt pretty good about themselves and their chances. Fortunately, there are four quarters."

After trailing Huntington 3-0 at the end of the first period, CDM (11-0) scored 5 straight goals in the second quarter to take a 5-3 lead into the lockerroom.

Casey Mix (Sr/Attack) got the drilling started for CDM, converting a feed to the back-side pipe from Jack Ortlieb (Sr/Attack). Senior midfielder Chris Von Der Ahe (2g,0a) netted two consecutive goals in less than three minutes and mid-way through the second period, CDM had drawn even with the Oilers. Von Der Ahe's first goal was unassisted. Senior midfielder Brett Nelson assisted on his second.

Two minutes later, Max Kline (1g,1a) took and inside feed from Mix on an extra-man play and gave the Sea Kings their first lead of the day. Less than a minute after Kline's goal, Ortlieb scored off of a feed from Todd Kitzens (Sr/Attack) . It was the first of six in a row for Ortlieb and the beginning of the end for Huntington.

When asked what he was thinking when the Kings went down 3-0 early, Mix had this to say: "We were confident in what we knew about them and what we knew about ourselves. If we did our thing, we knew we would be fine. It was what we talked about at the quarter and the half. We had seen all of them, but they had not seen all of us."

The first six minutes of the third quarter saw the Sea Kings, powered by three unassisted Ortlieb goals, outscore the Oilers 3-0 and take a commanding 8-3 lead.

Huntington scored two quick goals to pull back within three, but CDM responded quickly with two more tallies from Ortlieb to put the game out of reach at 10-5 with 4 minutes remaining. Ben Palitz (So/Attack) assisted on the ninth goal, Mix (1g,2a) on the tenth.

On Saturday, CDM begins its trip north during which it will play Thousand Oaks (Saturday 6:00 PM), San Ramon Valley (Monday 7:00 PM) and Amador Valley (Tuesday 7:00 PM).
