Kings roll through Thousand Oaks 11-4.
CDM began its trip north with a convincing 11-4 win over Thousand Oaks. The Kings (12-0) built a 9-1 lead In the first half and cruised through the second half, making wholesale substitutions and gaining valuable experience for its bench as the 2013 playoffs draw closer.
Seniors Todd Kitzens (0g,1a), Casey Mix 1g,4a), Brett Nelson (2g,1a) and Jack Ortlieb (5g,0a) had a hand in the first nine goals of the game.
"I thought our senior group did a nice job of demonstrating poise and leadership tonight," said CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "On these trips it's critical our leaders show the rest of the kids how to play on the road. Those guys had a lot of energy and intensity tonight and they set the tone early.
Brett Nelson scored the opening goal just two minutes into the game off a give and go feed from Casey Mix. Ortlieb made Mix look good again five minutes later, converting a feed to give the KIngs a 2-0 lead. Two minutes later, the Lancers (5-6) scored to draw within one, but that would be it for the hosts until the fourth quarter.
Nelson answered the hosts first goal with an unassisted banger just before the end of the quarter to increase the lead to 3-1.
The second quarter was all CDM. MIx scored off a feed from Kitzens, and then Ortlieb netted three in a row, the first two unassisted and the third off a feed from Mix. A few minutes later, Mix found Ben Palitz (So./Attack) to increase the Sea King lead to 8-1. Just before the break, Brett Nelson fed sophomore midfielder Logan Miller (1g,1a) to give CDM a 9-1 lead at half-time.
The third quarter featured Palitz's (2g,0a) second goal of the game less than a minute into the stanza. Ortlieb added his fifth of the night, burying a feed from senior midfielder Chris Von Der Ahe (0g,1a).
The Kings took advantage of the opportunity their 11-1 lead had given them and built depth and experience with their reserves, while resting their starters for the entire fourth quarter.
Sophomore goalie Hoyt Crance made 9 saves (.692 SV%). Once again, the Kings defense played well, allowing just 1 goal in the first 36 minutes.
The face-off group of Nino Chavez (So./Midfield), Kaden Ebbinga (Jr./Midfield) and Jake Wyatt (Sr. Midfield) played well, winning 11 of 18 draws (.611%).
Tomorrow, the team will visit UC, Santa Barbara and watch the Gauchos take on Sonoma State. After the game, the team will continue north to San Francisco wher they will face San Ramon Valley (8-4), ranked 6th in California on Monday night at 7:00 PM and Amador Valley (7-6) on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
