Kings comeback falls short in 12-11 OT loss
Ortlieb is held in check by a Tartan defender. The senior had three goals in CDM's losing effort.
Down 7-2 at the half, the Sea Kings led a furious 9 goal second half rally to take an 11-10 lead early in the fourth quarter, but fell to the host Tartans 12-11 in sudden death overtime.
"This was a tale of two halves for us today, commented CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "They are a very solid, well-coached team. When you play teams like that, it usually helps if you play well for all four quarters."
Senior attackman Casey Mix (4g,1a) scored the first goal of the game mid-way through the first quarter, converting a pass from Jack Ortlieb (Sr./Attack). The next goal for CDM would not come until the closing seconds of the first half.
Behind strong face-off play in the first half, St. Margaret's (13-4) scored seven unanswered goals to take a 7-1 lead just before the half. With two seconds remaining, Ortlieb (3g,2a) notched his first on the day and the KIngs (13-2) went to the locker room down 7-2.
"At halftime, we talked about finding ourselves," Mix added. "They had done a great job of converting opportunities, but we felt we had not. It was very out of character for us. We had too many turnovers. After all that, we still felt like we were very close to taking over the game. We just needed to get over the hump"
Seems like an odd perspective down 7-2, but take over they did. After the Tartans scored first to increase the lead to 8-2, the Kings went on a 5 goal run and turned what was headed toward a rout into a thriller.
Todd Kitzens (Sr./Attack) opened the scoring for CDM, finding net with a pass from Ortlieb. A minute later, It was Ortlieb's turn, taking a pass from Chris Von Der Ahe (Sr./Midfield). Seconds later, Kitzens scored his second goal and the visitor's had quickly cut the margin to 3.
Mix notched a pair of goals and the Kings were back within one at 8-7.
Sophomore goalie Hoyt Crance caught fire in the second half, making 12 saves and finishing the game with 16 (.571 SV%).
St. Margaret's would score twice in ten seconds and they quickly increased the lead to 10-7.
Mix found Ortlieb with less than a minute to go in the period, and the quarter ended 10-8.
It would not take long for CDM to complete the comeback. Senior midfielder Brett Nelson scored 38 seconds into the fourth period. Senior midfielder Chase McElroy (0g,1a) found Todd Kitzens (3g,0a) and the game was even at 10-10. Thirty seconds later, junior midfielder Kaden Ebbinga (0g,1a) fed Mix and the Kings had their second lead of the day.
The next nine minutes featured some solid defense at both ends of the field.
In the closing minutes, CDM had the ball and the lead. They just had to maintain possession and run out 1:24 to complete a remarkable turnaround.
But controversy creaped in to the last eighty-four seconds of regulation. It seemed several missed calls by the officials played a key role in CDM losing possession and the Tartans retaining possession. Twice in the last 1:24, it appeared CDM attackman Ortlieb was fouled, but neither penalty drew a flag from nearby officials. The second "non call" led to a Tartan possession and the tying goal.
During the ensuing Tartan possession, Crance made a key save and the next Tartan shot went wide to his left. He chased the shot and was several yards closer to the ball than the Tartan attackman on the backside of the play when it went out, but the official surprisingly awarded the ball to St. Margaret's.
The Tartans scored with 24 seconds remaining to bring the score to 11-11.
"I thought the last 2-3 minutes of the game were unfortunate. We made a few critical mistakes, but they committed at least one, if not two, significant fouls in the last minute and a half and nothing was called. Believe me, I am all for letting the kids decide the game, but a foul is a foul. And not getting the ball on that shot at the other end was a crime."

In the sudden death overtime, the Kings had more than one chance to seal the win, but could not find the net.
"I've been in enough overtime games to know when you don't convert three or four shots from inside of 10 yards, the goal at your end starts to get a lot smaller."
Up next for CDM is Marina (11-6) at Corona del Mar at 3:30 PM on Tuesday. The Kings close out the regular season on Friday at home at 3:30 PM against Mater Dei (3-10).
