Sea Kings reign down on Monarchs 17-4
Senior attackman Todd Kitzens was named team captain following CDM's 17-4 victory over Mater Dei.
Corona del Mar closed out another impressive regular season with a 17-4 win over Mater Dei. Behind hat tricks from seniors Casey Mix (3g,1a) and Brett Nelson (3g, 0a), Corona del Mar improved its record to 15-2 with a win over visiting Mater Dei (3-12).
The Kings made quick & easy work of the visiting Monarchs. Senior midfielder Brett Nelson scored the first goal of the game, unassisted at the 10:59 mark. Less than four minutes later, sophomore midfielder Sherwin Gersten (2g,0a) notched the Kings' second goal. Nelson scored two minutes later and CDM was off to a 3-0 lead. Senior midfielder Chris Von Der Ahe (2g,1a) scored the game's next goal and then assisted on Todd Kitzen's first goal of the game to give CDM a 5-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was much like the first. Behind goals from Ben Palitz (Soph./Attack), Jay Damon (Jr./Midfield), Casey Mix, Brett Nelson and Von Der Ahe, the hosts rolled over the visiting Monarchs and took a 10-0 lead into the break.
Mater Dei scored first to open the second half, but the Kings responded with a four goal run to increase the margin to 14-1.
Sophomore midfielder Max Kline (2g,3a) converted a feed from Palitz (1g,2a) at 10:51. Twenty-five seconds later, Kline switched roles and fed Mix (3g,1a) for CDM's twelfth goal. Gersten notched his second of the day and a few minutes later, Mix his third off a feed from sophomore midfielder Logan Miller (1g,1a). Miller scored to close out the quarter and the Kings carried a 14-2 lead into the final stanza.
In the fourth period, Kline buried a feed from Palitz to get the hosts to 16-2. Sophomore attackman Noah Howe closed out the scoring for CDM.
Sea Kings' netminder Hoyt Crance (So./Goalie) recorded 9 saves on the afternoon (.692 SV%).
The 2013 playoffs lie in wait, with seedings and pairings to be announced Saturday evening.
"We are excited about the opportunity ahead," commented CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "We are anxious to see the challenge laid out before us. Tomorrow is a big day."
