Sea Kings tame Dolphins 16-5, advance to 2nd round

Senior attackman Casey Mix had 4 goals and 3 assists in CDM's 16-5 playoff win over Dana Hills.
Top-seeded Corona del Mar began its CIF title defense in stellar fashion with a 16-5 first round win over Dana Hills (11-6). The Kings jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held an 11-2  advantage at halftime. With the win, CDM improves to 16-2.

"We took a good step forward today," said CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "These past few games, we have been asking many of our younger guys to carry more of the load down the stretch and they are handling it well. We got great production from them at both ends today."

Senior attackman Casey Mix (4g,3a) opened the scoring for the host Sea Kings with an unassisted goal mid-way through the first quarter. After Mix's goal, the Kings got two transition goals from their defensive midfield with sophomore longstick midfielder Brett Greenlee scoring at the 6:35 mark and classmate Chad Redfearn thirty seconds later. With just :06 remaining in the quarter, Mix found sophomore Max Kline (3g,0a) during an extra-man advantage and the Kings led 4-0.

The next six goals CDM scored were all assisted, many in transition, and two came with the extra-man advantage.

Less than a minute into the second period, senior midfielder Chris Von Der Ahe (1g,3a) converted a feed from Todd Kitzens (2g,3a) and CDM led 5-0.

The Dolphins finally got on the board with 8:48 remaining in the half.

It took the Kings less than a minute to respond when sophomore middie Sherwin Gersten (So./Midfield) stuck a Von Der Ahe pass in the back of the net. Mix fed senior Chase McElroy (1g,0a) for CDM's seventh goal. Thirty seconds later, it was sophomore midfielder Logan Miller (0g,1a) finding senior midfielder Brett Nelson (1g,0a). Kitzens assisted Kline on his second goal with a little more than four minutes remaining and CDM increased its lead to 9-1.

Dana Hills notched their second goal with 3:36 left before halftime, but CDM, once again, responded almost immediately. Mix found Palitz for a 10-1 lead and the Dolphins were called for a cross-check after the goal. CDM retained possession and made the 16th seed pay dearly for the foul. Mix tallied his second and it was 11-2 Sea Kings at the break.

CDM would score the first three goals of the second half. Kline made good on a pass from Von Der Ahe, Mix scored his third at 6:25, and Kitzens finished off a pass from Von Der Ahe. The Kings were up 14-2.

Sophomore goalie Hoyt Crance was solid throughout the game with 9 saves (.750 SV%). He allowed just 3 goals before freshman Nick Guizan made his CIF debut early in the fourth quarter. Guizan made several outstanding saves in the closing stanza, finishing with five saves (.714 SV%).

The visitors would score three fourth quarter goals, but the game would eventually end with an impressive 16-5 first-round win for the Kings.

Up next will be #9 seed Beckman (13-4) on Thursday at 5:15 PM at Corona del Mar. The Patriots upset #8 Los Alamitos 9-8 in playoff action Tuesday night. Beckman was the only lower seed to advance to the second round.

The last time the Kings and Patriots met was on March 13th. CDM defeated Beckman 13-6. (Read More)
