Sea Kings dethroned by Tartans 12-7
Senior midfielder Brett Nelson (USC) is swarmed by St. Margaret's defenders in 12-7 loss.
Corona del Mar's impressive run toward a second consecutive CIF Southern Section championship was derailed Wednesday evening by St. Margaret's 12-7.
The Tartan's sophomore face-off specialist Ryan Harnisch dominated the face-off X giving the St. Margaret's the majority of the initial possessions all evening. The third-seeded Tartans (21-4) have won 18 straight games after the transfer face-off midfielder emerged from the CIF mandated 30-day transfer waiting period.
"He was the difference tonight," CDM head coach G.W. Mix said of Harnisch. "We knew we would have our hands full there and we were right. The adjustments we made were just a little too late."
Harnisch enabled the Tartans to play "make it, take it" after most of their goals, which limited CDM's offensive possessions. He won 17 of 22 face-offs (.772%).
"Their offense does some nice things, but they get a chance to play it a lot thanks to Harnisch. In my opinion, he is the Player of the Year in Orange County. I believe he had the biggest impact of any player on their team with respect to their winning the championship."
The Tartans opened the scoring mid-way through the first period, but senior midfielder Brett Nelson (1g,0a) tied the game at the 6:10 mark. Four minutes later, the Tartans scored and took a 2-1 lead into the quarter break.
Early in the second quarter, Sherwin Gersten (So./Midfield) found Casey Mix (Sr./Attack) open during a Sea King extra-man opportunity and the score was even at 2-2. The top-seeded Kings took a 3-2 lead five minutes later on a Chris Von Der Ahe goal with 4:36 remaining.
In less than two minutes, Harnish won 4 face-offs, the Tartans scored four goals and the upset-minded three seed had a 6-3 lead at halftime.
CDM scored the first goal of the second half behind an unassisted effort by Ben Palitz (So./Midfield). The Tartans quickly answered to bring the score to 7-4. Hugh Crance (So./Defense) found Jack Ortlieb (Sr./Attack) on a rare face-off break and CDM had closed the margin to 7-5, but that would be the end of the Kings' run.
St. Margaret's scored the next three goals and opened a sizeable 10-5 lead at the end of the third period.
The beginning of the fourth period showed some signs of promise and a potential comeback for the defending champions. Mix (2g,0a) and Gersten (0g,2a) connected for a second time on extra-man and the Tartan lead was 10-6.

The 6:50 remaining on the clock was not a friend to the Sea Kings who had to resort to open goal double teams to tray and regain late game possessions. The Tartans handled the pressure well, scoring twice in the final three minutes. Von Der Ahe (2g,0a) notched his second of the game to bring the score to 11-7, but that was a close as CDM would get.
Sophomore goalie Hoyt Crance made 18 saves (.600 SV%) in the losing effort.
"St. Margaret's has had a terrific season. They earned the right to play in this game and to win it. Going into last season, our coaches felt they were the team to beat in Orange County. Fortunately, we were able to make our run and win the Championship. Many of those same kids were back for them this year, along with a new coach and a few transfer players. It was their time."
