Five crowns for five Kings
Senior attackman and UCSB-bound Casey Mix was named First Team All-County and All-American.
Five Sea Kings received 2013 post-season awards at last night's US Lacrosse Orange County Post-Season Awards meeting. Casey Mix, Jack Ortlieb, Brett Nelson, Hoyt Crance and Hugh Crance all received honors in the wake of their 2013 performances.
"Post-season accolades are always nice for the kids and the program," commented CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "The All-County and All-American balloting is particularly rewarding because the votes come from the other coaches in the county. Our kids have been recognized as top competitors by those against whom we compete. That always means a little bit more."
Senior attackman Casey Mix (60g,43a,103pts) was honored as a US Lacrosse All-American and was named First Team All-County for the second consecutive year. Mix was the top All-County vote recipient at the attack position.
Fellow classmate Jack Ortlieb (59g,21a,80pts) was a repeat First Team All-County attackman.
"Casey and Jack have been on the lacrosse field together since the third grade. I think it is perfectly fitting they end their Orange County lacrosse careers as teammates on the top All-County team. In the seven years I have been involved in high school lacrosse in Orange County, I have not seen a more effective pair of attackmen. We are going to miss them and their production. Their successors need to get busy."
Senior midfielder Brett Nelson (27g,7,a,34pts) was honored as an Academic All-American and named First Team All-County. Nelson fought through a number of injuries all season to provide outstanding leadership and athleticism for the Kings at the midfield. Nelson's talent and his 4.15 GPA made his selection as an Academic All-American fairly easy.
"Brett's effort and field presence speak for themselves. His transcript does much the same thing with respect to his performance as a student. He is the epitome of an All-American student-athlete and it was nice to see him recognized for his dedication and success in both pursuits."
Sophomore goalie Hoyt Crance was named Second Team All-County. In his first season as a varsity starter, Crance recorded 216 saves in 21 games (10.28 saves/game), while allowing just 114 goals (5.42 goals/game). His saves per game ranked highest among the four finalists, three of whom were seniors. He finished the season with a .654 SV%, second highest in the group.
Fellow sophomore Hugh Crance was named to the Second Team as a defenseman. Crance has been CDM's top cover guy since the beginning of his freshman year.
"The future of CDM lacrosse is very bright. Our sophomore class has a lot of depth and talent and Hoyt and Hugh's recognition last night is evidence of that. They are tireless workers and will play a significant role in the future success of our program."
